Debut novelist and member of the Heiltsuk First Nation, Reid pens a thoughtful coming-of-age story filled with drama, humor, and philosophy. Derik, 12 years old, is traveling by boat from Vancouver to Bella Bella with his father, George, and family friend Raven, a shaman. They are headed to Bella Bella for the funeral of George's estranged father. Derik, whose mother is white, has high hopes for the trip; he wants to connect with the Heiltsuk side of the family and their Indigenous traditions. He also wants to catch his first salmon and prove his skills to George, who used to earn a living as a fisherman. Thoughtful Derik is also as self-conscious and dramatic as any kid his age. Spirit guide and part-time narrator Redbird helps Derik along, but Derik (and readers) have to watch out because Redbird may also be a trickster. Reid's snappy dialogue mixes with interludes of poetic waxing about Indigenous history, masculinity, and philosophy, creating a wholly unique and intriguing novel that will appeal to fans of experimental, character-driven fiction.
